The New Indian Rupee Symbol
After so many months finally our own Indian Rupee gets its own symbol. Now Rupee becomes only just the fifth currency to get its own symbol after US Dollar, Euro, British Pound, Japanese Yen. This new symbol was designed by the Mumbai IIT post-graduate D Udaya Kumar. This symbol was finalized by the Union Cabinet after months long process of choosing the same from various designs created by many who were involved in this process and finally the IITian D Udayakumar’s design was chosen among them all.
This new Rupee Symbol combines the roman letter R along with the Devanagri Ra to make it both modern and yet retaining our culture. Now with this new symbol for Indian Rupee, we have distinguished ourselves from other countries like Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Nepal and Indonesia which too have their currency named as Rupees or Rupiah.
This design, according to Udaya Kumar, is an inspiration from our Indian Tri-color. Now the government will strive hard to make this new Indian Rupees Symbol more popular by various means including trying to include it in the keyboards and software. As well as printing the same in the currency notes and coins.

Udaya Kumar wins Rs. 2.5 lakh for this design he had created. Proud D Udaya Kumar quoted as saying, “My design is based on the Tricolour, with two lines at the top and white space in between. I wanted the symbol for the Rupee to represent the Indian flag. It is a perfect blend of Indian and Roman letters: a capital ‘R’, and Devanagari ‘ra’, which represent rupiya, to appeal to international and Indian audiences.”
Now Indian Rupees will go places with its unique design which comes with the global look and surely is here to stay for the rest of our lives.
